The Making of a Stellar Score on the GRE GRE/MAT Graduate School Blog I often hear people wonder whether it is possible to increase one’s GRE score. They believe that a standardized test score is more or less set in stone, one’s score changing plus or minus two points depending on the day. This line of thinking is actually woefully inaccurate; with a combination of diligence, resources, and the proper approach, you can greatly increase your score. Indeed, I’ve seen a couple of Magoosh students increase their scores by 29 points. Mind you, I’m not trying to shamelessly promote our brand. Instead, I not only want do away with the thinking that one’s GRE score is immutable, but also show you how to make significant point increases to your current score. An Important Question So what is a good GRE score? Well, it is one in which you improve dramatically. What this means differs wildly on the situation. To illustrate, imagine two students who have gone up by 12 points. One goes from a 145 in both sections to a 151 in both sections; the other goes from 164 in both sections to a perfect score. Clearly, the latter is far more impressive, since any point increase you can attain once you are over 165 is amazing. The first student, by contrast, hasn’t really done too much for his competitive edge. Had that student increased by 24 points, on the other hand, then he has achieved a great score. He need not feel like he has to get in the mid-160’s to make his effort worthwhile; his scores will help him get into some decent programs. The reason I mention this hypothetical student is I don’t want to give the impression that the only good score is one in the high 160’s and that everyone is capable of achieving that score. My experience has shown me that certain point increases are difficult to come by. Anything over a 30-point increase is exceedingly rare on the GRE. How Do You Get Your “Good” GRE Score? Diligence You’ve hard it countless times before, but it’s true: hard work is the only way to make big things happen. The GRE is no exception; you’ll need to apply yourself day and night, making sacrifices in your social life or your Netflix viewing. Relaxing to your favorite music might have to be replaced by listening to GRE vocabulary podcasts. Resources There is a plethora of bad material out there. Really speaking, anyone with a blog can start writing questions or pitching strategies. Always exercise caution and stick with trusted names and questions. (For helpful book reviews: Magoosh’s GRE book reviews). Approach This is, in many ways, the most important facet to improving your score; yet, it is often the subtlest. First off, don’t just do practice question after practice question. Understand your mistakes, and how the test writers create question. Learning the kind of answer choices that tempt you is important as well. Try out the strategies in a few different prep books to find out which one(s) suit you best. Finally, take plenty of practice tests so you can constantly see how you are improving and, more importantly, which parts of the test you need to focus on. Takeaway By combining the three elements above, you can witness dramatic increases in your GRE score. Of course, you will need plenty of time to see this happen. But during those periods where you aren’t improving, or aren’t improving as much, know that it is possible. Exam Day Hints Exam time is here but there’s no need to panic! Our tutors have shared their best exam day tips to get you through this scary time. From everyone at Tutorfair: GOOD LUCK! 1. The night before: go to bed half an hour earlier than usual to wind yourself down ready for a good night’s sleep. 2. In the morning: eat a high protein and complex carbohydrate breakfast. It will release energy  slowly through the day, keeping you alert for your exam. 3. Write a list of anything you wish to take with you to the exam in advance. Forgetting even a small thing, such a pre-exam snack, could throw you off course and add to feelings of nerves. 4. Arrive early to your exam venue and don’t speak about the exam topics with your peers. Last -minute discussions about which topics everyone has focused on won’t help and may panic you. 5. Accept those butterflies in your stomach before the exam! Those feelings of nerves are increasing your heart rate, delivering more oxygen to your brain and keeping you alert. 6. When the examiner announces the start there will be a frantic rustling of papers. Don’t dive in with everyone else: wait for the commotion to die down and then calmly turn over your paper. When you see the questions for the first time, you’ll be quiet and focused instead of panicky. 7. Once  you’ve  warmed up your brain with a few of the easier questions,  consider going to the  end of the paper and working backwards. Doing the harder questions first, when your brain  is fresher, may result in fewer careless mistakes. 8. An old but important favourite: check how many marks are assigned to each question and spend your time accordingly! If it’s a 60-minute exam with 60 marks, you can spend 1 minute on each mark. 9. Jot down any vital equations, facts, quotes or dates at the start while your brain is fresh. As you get more tired you can refer back to them. Anything that takes less than a minute to put down is worth it. Don’t spend too much time though â€" they might not come up. 10. Don’t waste your energy and confidence on a question that feels insurmountable. Circle it and come back to it later. You might figure it out while filling in the rest of your paper; or a later question may even remind you of the answer.

Children swiping pages of real books Children swiping pages of real books Children swiping pages of real booksSchoolsChildren distressed that they can`t swipe the pages of real books There are numerous reports from teachers at receptions schools and nurseries that children are misunderstanding the basic mechanics of how a book works. Instead of seeking to turn a page in a normal manner, they are attempting to swipe the page left with one finger. The national Union of Teachers (NUT) recently convened at their annual conference, this year held in Brighton, and speakers told of the `disturbing` trend of children thinking books work like tablets and phones, and becoming distressed when the pages refuse to change with a mere finger swipe. Jennifer Bhambri-Lyte, a delegate from North Somerset reminisced about the romance of books themselves - the tactile, physical component that was being lost with the encroaching ubiquity of electronic reading devices: `Kindles and iPads are wonderful things, but many of my friends talked about the smell of a book, finding tickets and receipts that someone had left as a bookmark, echoes of all the people that had been there before.` Ms Bhambri-Lyte said she had been both a nursery and reception teacher, and that she hadn`t yet got used to the new reading habits of her pupils: `I personally still find it disturbing to see a child pick up a book and try to swipe left.` She went on to say that books are expensive, and many families would struggle to afford all the books their children might want. It is understandable then that, with e-books being so much cheaper (many of the classics are completely free) many young children are finding the screen a more familiar sight than the paper page for their reading experiences. Many would say that as long as children are reading, what does it matter if they are using electronic devices, rather than traditional books? A child can easily carry their whole library around with them - whatever mood they are in they will likely have a book available to accommodate it. This can only encourage their reading habits, and who could possibly say that`s a bad thing? The University of Toronto published the results of a study last year, which unfortunately suggested some disturbing facts. Children in the UK under the age of 3 use tablets and smartphones for an average of 44 minutes every day, and the results of the study suggested that, for children aged between 6 months and two years, each 30 minute session of screen time resulted in an increased risk of delayed speech by as much as 49 percent. It is generally accepted that by the age of two or three infants should be communicating using sentences of between three and four words: the study suggested that there was a negative correlation between screen time, and language development. This is the very first study that has suggested smartphones and tablets can have a negative effect on infant linguistic growth. Dr Catherine Birken, staff paediatrician at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, after commenting on how smartphones and tablets are now an everyday part of modern life, went on to say: `While new pediatric guidelines suggest limiting screen time for babies and toddlers, we believe that the use of smartphones and tablets with young children has become quite common. This is the first study to report an association between handheld screen time and increased risk of expressive language delay.` Dr Birken was adamant, given the seriousness of the findings, the very real negative impact smartphone and tablet use can have on language development, that screen media use should be discouraged in all children younger than 18 months. I know many parents who see tablets and smartphones as a real asset in day to day parenting. My friend has a child whose wailing can only be assuaged by a quick you tube fix - while a colleague with an 18 month old child can always placate them through feeding time with their phone. As regards those children mistakenly swiping paper pages, I feel that this is not a mistake that would be often repeated, and likely stems from there being no books at home at all. Something worth considering is that this generation of children are the first who have had smartphones and tablets in their lives from birth. It is wonderful how naturally children take to new technology - swiping and pressing buttons seems to come naturally to them - but if studies warn us of potential deleterious effects of prolonged exposure, we need to take notice. 23 months ago0Add a Comment

This is done through transliterations and/or exclusively oral language practice. However, learning a new alphabet is valuable and a lot easier than youd think. Plus, it comes with many great benefits.For instance, knowing the alphabet makes pronunciation easier. Transliterations are sometimes difficult to interpret, and you might not always hear the subtleties of pronunciation during listening practice. If you know how all the letters are pronounced though, its often easier to determine the pronunciation by simply looking at the word.Additionally, learning the alphabet will allow you to read. Even with very basic knowledge of the alphabet and very little vocabulary, youll be able to start sounding out words. Once you start sounding out the words, youll be able to recognize the ones youve learned to say already. Youll also be able to learn new words just by reading them, particularly cognates (words that sound similar between languages) shared by English and your new language.Finally, knowing the alphabet enables you to use a dictionary. Without knowing the letters and what order they appear in, its hard to look up words in a foreign language, so you might struggle to find a proper definition for a word you just encountered.How to Learn a New Alphabet: 7 Tips and Tricks to Learn by the Letter1. Study a few letters at a time.Trying to study the whole alphabet at once might be biting off more than you can chew. If you break it down into small chunks, though, its easily digestible.There are several different ways you might do this.One way is to start at the beginning of the alphabet and simply learn the first three or four letters. The next time you study, work on the next three or four letters. Continue doing this until youve learned the whole alphabet.Another way to break up letters into more manageabl e sets is to group similar letters together. For instance, ROYGBIV helps you remember what order colors appear in within rainbows.Similarly, mnemonic devices can be used to help you learn a new alphabet. One helpful way to learn letters in an unfamiliar script is to associate those letters with images. If you consider the letter a tiny drawing, youll have an easier time recognizing it when you see it again.For instance, the Russian letter  ? has always reminded me of a tiny fish.What do letters in your target language look like to you?3. Try writing out words in your native language using the alphabet of your target language.Think of words you know in your native language. Then, sound those words out using letters in your target language.Not only will this help you associate the letters youre learning with the sounds they make, it will also make you feel like a spy preparing a secret message. Just try not to do an unnecessary backwards somersault to exit the room a fter.4. If theres an alphabet song in your target language, listen to it.Whether or not the alphabet song is well known, chances are strong that someone has made up an alphabet song for your target language. Listening to such songs is incredibly useful because its often easier to remember material thats put to music. Thats why you still know all the lyrics to Call Me Maybe.Luckily, you can use this phenomenon for more than just karaoke. It can help you learn a new alphabet quickly and efficiently.And when it comes to alphabet songs, YouTube is a treasure trove of options. You might try an Arabic alphabet song, a Chinese pinyin song, a  Japanese alphabet song, a Korean alphabet song, a Russian alphabet song  or countless others. Simply searching your target language and alphabet song will likely produce several options for you to choose from. You might even try listening to several different songs so you can hear all the letters in a different context.5. Learn to repeat the alphabet yourself.Lets be real. The more you learn, the less likely you are to need to know the alphabet in order. After all, no one is going to come up to you on the street and insist you recite the French alphabet. While having a general idea of alphabetical order will certainly help you look up words in a dictionary, knowing the exact order isnt always essential.That being said, when youre first learning the alphabet, its helpful to memorize it in order.Once you have it memorized, you can easily repeat it to yourself on your way to work or school, in the shower or while waiting in line somewhere.Visualize the letters as you go through the alphabet, and youre reinforcing your ability to identify the written letter, your ability to associate the letter name with the letter and your ability to connect sounds to letters.
